Obituary

Edna Louise Pope Hosie was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1927, in the small farming community of Ulysses, Kansas. She passed away peacefully at the age of 99 in West Linn, Oregon.

During the Dust Bowl, Edna's parents, Grace and Earl Pope, moved their family west to Roseburg, Oregon in search of new opportunities. Growing up with eight siblings (one of whom passed away in infancy), Edna dreamed of seeing the world beyond her small hometown—a dream she would fulfill many times over.

After attending college in California, Edna began a remarkable career of service and adventure. She accepted a Special Services position with the Sixth Army at the Presidio in San Francisco, coordinating recreational programs for able-bodied servicemen. During the Korean War, she joined the American Red Cross as a military hospital recreation worker. Her assignments took her to a military hospital in Osaka, Japan, and later to the 121st Evacuation Hospital in Seoul, Korea. There she helped produce United Nations entertainment shows that brought music, dance, and moments of joy to troops and local residents during a difficult time.

Returning to California, Edna served as a field director for the Girl Scouts of America, training troop leaders and directing camps in the Sierra Nevada. She later taught physical education at Balboa High School in San Francisco before embarking on another overseas adventure with the Department of the Army as a dormitory supervisor at Paris American High School in Paris, France.

In 1963, Edna returned to San Francisco to teach physical education and health at City College of San Francisco. She was later appointed Dean of Women, a role that reflected her leadership, compassion, and dedication to helping others.

At age 49, Edna experienced another life-changing adventure. As she fondly put it, "I married a Canadian and have lived happily ever after!" She and her husband, Bob Hosie, divided their years between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Rancho Mirage, California, where they enjoyed golf, tennis, their beloved dogs, and an active circle of friends.

Following Bob's passing, Edna moved to Charbonneau, Oregon to be near her family. She is survived by her sisters, Dorene Baird, Wilma Pope, and Rosalie Barker, along with two stepdaughters, many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her warmth, adventurous spirit, and joyful outlook on life.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 18th, at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will gather the following day in Lake Oswego, Oregon, for a celebration of Edna's extraordinary life.

From the plains of Kansas to Japan, Korea, France, Canada, and beyond, Edna embraced life with curiosity, courage, and grace. She never stopped exploring the world—or encouraging others to do the same—and she leaves behind a legacy of adventure, service, and love that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
