Maxine Gray, age 101, born Leon Maxine Cook Oct. 11, 1924, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025. She is pre-deceased by her parents, and seven of her eight siblings. Her husband Junior Gray, passed in 1990. Daughters Terry Lynn Hedge Hill and Kathy Hedge preceded her in death. Daughter, Betty Hedge of Roseburg and son Mac Westmoreland of Arkansas survive. Stepson Burl Hedge and wife, Betty, and stepdaughter, Carol Hedge Riley (John) passed before. Sister Ina Orrick of Arkansas remains, as do numerous nieces and nephews, Maxine's grandsons, Kelly Hicks (Gina) of Roseburg, and Justin Westmoreland (Susan) of Colorado, her great-granddaughter Sierra Westmoreland, and chosen great-greats Destiny, Steven, Mason, Kharlie, Khloe, Ethan, Silas, Lucas, and Lily.
Maxine was a pretty girl. Her beauty never left her.
She was a good student, attending school through the 9th grade. She completed her GED at UCC in her fifties.
Maxine, the homebody, left school after 9th grade to help her mom with gardening, canning and other domestic chores. Maxine's house was clean, she was clean, and the family's clothes were clean and ironed. She was known as an excellent cook, especially for her pies, homemade rolls, buttermilk biscuits and cornbread. Her love for pretty flowers came from her mother. Wherever she lived, Maxine's yard was full of them.
She loved to dance. She and her sister Christine spent many fun filled hours going to dances at the Eagles Lodge in Sutherlin or other venues. It bonded them. Saturdays, she watched country music on tv. She was a huge fan of the Irish singer Daniel O'Donnell.
Maxine had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good belly laugh. She was intelligent and competitive. (It was hard to beat her at a game of Pitch!) She attended many church events as a child. Redeemers Fellowship was her Roseburg church home. She accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized in 2013.
Maxine is loved and greatly missed. Our Hope lies in knowing as brothers and sisters in Christ we'll be together again in Heaven. Amen!
Maxine has been laid to rest at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. A celebration of life is planned for early 2026.
